Luis Cousiño Squella (1835 - 1873), hijo único y heredero universal de don
Matías Cousiño, nació en Santiago en 1835. Huérfano de madre, su educación estuvo a
cargo de doña Luz Gallo y se crió junto a sus hermanastros, Emeterio e Isidora.
Desde joven su padre lo vinculó al mundo de los negocios, incluyéndolo en la sociedad de comercio "Cousiño e Hijo" (1855), recibiendo como herencia los yacimientos de Coronel y la mitad de Lota. En 1863, al fallecer don Matías, compró la otra mitad de la compañía y extendió sus actividades, integrando la extracción del cobre. Fomentó la explotación de la plata (todavía poseía la veta "Descubridora" en Chañarcillo ) e introdujo en Chile la industria de la seda. Falleció en Perú en 1873 a la edad de 38 años, aquejado de tuberculosis. En 1855 se había casado con su hermanastra, Isidora Goyenechea Gallo. Como su esposa y heredera, quedó al mando de la familia compuesta por 7 hijos: Alfredo, Luis Alberto, Carlos Roberto, Luis Arturo, Adriana, Loreto y María Luz. |
Luis Cousiño Squella (1835 - 1863), only son and universal heir of Matías Cousiño, was born in Santiago in 1835. Without his mother, was Luz Gallo, his stepmother who was responsible of his education, and he grew up with his stepbrother and sister Emeterio and Isidora. His father introduced him to the business world at a young age, including his in the commercial enterprise of "Cousiño and Son" in 1855. As inheritance he received the coal fields in Coronel and half of Lota. When his father died in 1863, Luis bought the other half of the enterprise and extended his patrimony with cupriferous activities. he promoted the exploitation of silver mines (he was still the owner of "La Descubridora" in Chañarcillo) and introduced in Chile the silk industry. He died in Perú in 1873 at the age of 38 suffering of tuberculosis. In 1855 he had married his stepsister Isidora Goyenechea. Like his wife she heiress the Cousiño fortune, therefore took command of her family made up of seven children; Alfredo, Luis, Alberto, Carlos Roberto, Arturo, Adriana, Loreto y María Luz. |
